Linking up to “Freshly Pieced” for WIP Wednesday!

  • NEW PROJECTS: 3
  • WIP’s: 3
  • UFO’s: 9
  • FLIMSIES: 2
  • FINISHES: 7

New Projects:

  1. Frivols #2 – not suIMG_1926re I LOVE this months project, but I figured its good to put it together anyway 🙂 I am using these projects as leader/enders while working on the kids new quilts. I am surprised at how fast they come together when you aren’t really trying lol!

2. Little M’s Quilt – Her aIMG_1907-1bsolute FAVORITE color is yellow! This is a stack n whack quilt I am putting together from a yellow/orange fabric that had red flowers. I sewed the flower fabric to the red bee fabric before cutting the triangles. The background was supposed to be an off
white but the quilt was reading “too red” and so I switched to a yellow background. I am trying to use up my stash instead of buy more where I can so I opted for this fun yellow for a “border with butterflies and flowers, it also gives a little teal to brighten the quilt. It is however a busy fabric and so I am using this nice yellow gingham to “disappear” between the stars.

IMG_1928

3. Snowball Donation Quilt – This is almost a flimsy already!!!! October is donation month at our local quilt guild. This was a “kit” that I sewed up and need to quilt before the next meeting ready for donation 🙂

WIPs:

IMG_56601. Baby J’s Quilt –  IMG_5623

I used my X Blocks tool and a little math to create this for baby J. I wanted to show more of the turtles and less black so instead of using 3 2 ½ inch strips I adjusted it and used one of the marked lines to line it up for cutting, I got the effect I desired of the diamond shape in two-tone by cutting the strips with dark green with the template right side up, the lighter green with the template wrong side up.

I had purchased all the turtle fabric that the store had but when I saw these rows, despite my mathematical adjustments I was still a little sad that the turtles were not prominent. So after a quick google search I was able to find more of both the turtle fabric and black fabric online and hey presto! It was in my cart lol!

WIP Wednesday 9-16-15

I am FINALLY getting back to sewing 🙂 New Koala Cabinets mean that I can sew away and when the kids wake up its like I wasn’t even sewing lol! I also am organizing the garage and my longarm/quilting supplies and fabric stash and so plan to be WAY more organized that I have been!

So: Onto WIP WEDNESDAY

  • NEW PROJECTS: 1
  • WIP’s: 3
  • UFO’s: 5
  • FLIMSIES: 1
  • FINISHES: 1

New Projects:

IMG_1681Baby J’s Quilt – Baby J turned ONE this past weekend! and when you are #5 you get to celebrate this milestone by driving 2 hours leaving before the sun comes up to cheer your siblings on in their first robot competition! Sadly though, we arrived to find it had been postponed and no one told us 😦

So…. we went for breakfast at at super nice place called the Mangy Moose in Manteca CA. They were so nice to us and the food was great… we will definitely go back! What also is in Manteca? Ladybug Quilts of course!  And since it was baby J’s birthday I just had to get him some fabric! These turtles were so adorable, I paired them with two tones of great and a little black and gold dotted fabric.

WIPS:

IMG_1680Frivols Club #1 – I am having so much fun working on this quilt. It actually is sewing up pretty fast and I already have Frivolous Club #2 here so I need to get moving on this one! I generally hate “kits” and things where I am making something the same as everyone else but these tins were too cute not to sign up for! I did not sign up for the finishing kits and so am adding fabric from my stash to make it “mine” when I can.

IMG_8646

New YearsDay Mystery Quilts (One straight, one on point) – These are finally on the frame and being quilted! I had some brown fabric yardage that was just the perfect size to use as backing for both.

UFO’s:

I have UFO’s galore but in an attempt to get my sewing brain organized in order to actually finish some of the UFO’s I am doing things slightly differently now: When a project is finished I will bag
up any bonus HST’s, strip sets left etc that I don’t want to just throw into my scrap system and when a need arises such as a birthday gift or inspiration strikes I will use this to make something new.

Usually I don’t like to go straight into making something with my “leftovers” since by the end of a project I usually don’t want to see the same fabrics
again! But its a shame to split up fabrics that have been pul
led to go together or strips that have been sewn and after they have been left to “sit” for a while I’m ready to make something with it!

I also have some “traditional” UFO’s but they won’t be noted here until I have sorted them and have them in the “somewhere near ready to be worked on” pile 🙂

FLIMSIES:

IMG_1584J’s Quilt – this is a quilt I purchased fabrics for during the last shop hop, He requested blue, green and orange and picked the first two pieces of fabric
which set the tone for the rest of the shop hop. I tried to pick fabrics that reflect his personality so there are fruits, bicycles and many other things in the quilt. It will be a quilt for his bed. Here it is on the design wall befor
e I sewed it together, I have since added a piano key border and now just have to prepare (find in the garage!) the backing and then it can go on the frame next.

FINISHES:

I made this table runner from teeny tiny bonus HST’s that were left from a quilt I made for a friend back in 2012 (yes its been “simmering” that long lol!) I love how it came out. It finished at approximately 14 x 24 inches. IMG_1580IMG_1578

WIP Wednesday 2/4/2015

I’m linking up with Freshly Pieced for WIP Wednesday again.

New Projects:

1. Baby J’s Christmas Stocking: With all the drama between Baby J arriving and his surgery, I am sad to say that I didn’t get to sewing his Christmas Stocking in time for Christmas 😦 So I am working on it each time I work on my “not so last minute Christmas” BOM. Here are the strips all sewn together….

DSCF9106

2. Superbowl Medallion:

I couldn’t resist this one from quilting.about.com …. in fact I went a little further and cut 4 blocks instead of one… they finish at 24 inches so with multiple borders I plan to turn these into a king sized quilt. Here is my block partially sewn and laid out.

DSCF9101 - Version 2

I store my projects in these 12 x 12 scrapbooking project cases with labels so that I can pull them out at work on them when I feel like it in between other projects 🙂

DSCF9102 - Version 2

WIPS:

1. Hearts Table Runner/Placemats –

I have all the blocks sewn together, and now have started with the sashing. Once Quilted I will cut this “quilt” apart to give 9 placemats and one table runner. This is my goal project for A Lovely Year of Finishes, which I am linking up to… I WILL have these finished by the end of February and if I am lucky…. maybe even valentines day 🙂

DSCF9093 - Version 2DSCF9104

2. Bright Stars QAL Still moving slowly as leaders/enders when I am working on other things, but I have moved on to this part now 🙂

DSCF9099 - Version 2 DSCF9098 - Version 2

3. Hip to be Square challenge

DSCF8929 - Version 2

I will not be getting this complete by the deadline 😦 I have made progress with all 42 blocks complete and with borders…. it was going to be a “Minecraft inspired” quilt for Big J for his bed…. however when he came to help with the layout it seems that he is more particular about color and pattern choice than I first thought; I had taken out the pink and any really obvious feminine prints but it seems that he wasn’t as sure about that being okay as I was lol! So… I will add some pink (as I already have one block completed which I took out before) and expand it to a square 7 x 7 quilt with borders maybe for A’s queen bed or even a large picnic blanket.

4. Half Hearted Quilt:

I took this with me along with my featherweight on our recent trip to San Diego and managed to get 3 out of the 4 top triangles sewn on.

5. Mystery Mondays

DSCF9094 - Version 2

The first blocks are complete 🙂 All ready for the next set of directions due Monday.

6. NYD Mystery Quilt – no progress.

1. Customer Pinwheel Quilt … All done!

2. Mustache Quilt

IMG_8710

This was a quilt that I put together for a friends son who turned 1. They had a “little man” themed birthday party. I cut the mustaches from my own design with my Silhouette Cameo and followed this video tutorial for the 3D bow tie blocks. I quilted it with a dense meander on the stripes leaving the bow ties to “puff up”, the mustaches were quilted with a spiral type quilting and the border I quilted all pebbles with his name on two sides.

Thanks for looking!

“Not so last minute Christmas”

January trees is complete. All paper pieced. Im not sure I love my color combo …. It actually looks better in this picture ;/ It will be much more subtle than I would normally do but at least I am using my Christmas fabric.

Friday 1-23-15

Linking up to TGIFF….

DSCF8950 - Version 2

This is my Project Quilting Season 6 Challenge 2 Entry: “Sunrise/Sunset”. It is a set of 8 quilted coasters with a paper pieced sunburst with appliqué quarter sun sewn from my scraps. The green border/backing is a velour that I had in my stash. The finished at around 5 ½ inches square and just what we needed to brighten up our house this spring. The sunbursts are quilted in straight lines along each burst with decorative stitching around the circular part. They were then backed with the same green fabric and finished with the envelope method where I stitched around the sunburst square to create a nice border; one of these are showing the back in the picture above.

DSCF8947 - Version 2

This is my aurifil mini for January all completed. I tried out a new binding method that I found here. I thought it was easy but I had to fenangle it a little and will be tweaking it for future projects until I am fully happy with it as a binding method. It has a hanging sleeve and I quilted swirls in the white and left the red to “pop”. The red border has one of my favorite bible verses quilted around it:

James 1:2-3New International Version (NIV)

Trials and Temptations

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance..

This will be a surprise gift for a dear friend…..

Thanks for looking 🙂

I have finished sewing all my blocks with 1 inch finished squares (8x8s), they all have borders now. I have sewn some 2x2s with 4 inch finished squares and these have borders too… now to cut more scraps and get sewing some 4x4s with 2 inch finished squares, border them and then get the “Minecraft” quilt top put together in time for the deadline!!!

4. Half Hearted Quilt  All the pieces are now cut out… I had to recut and finagle the background triangles because I didn’t quite have enough of the paw print fabric but I added a different fabric that I think will work out well. Now to get sewing…..

DSCF8922 - Version 2
